Make-up Tips
What is the proper method for lining my eyes and lips?Lining your eyes is what defines the shape of the eye. Start by working from the outside at the end of the lashes towards the inside and stopping where the eyelashes start on the top lid. Make sure to apply your liner a little thicker on the outside this will give your eyes a nice shape. Then on the bottom lid again start on the outside where the lashes end and work your way inward stopping where your bottom lashes begin. Make sure depending on how your lashes grow that you do not close your liner on the ends this will cause the eye to appear smaller, and as I said earlier your eyes are the main focal point of your make-up.A little trick I learned while doing make-up in the salon is to use a white pencil to line the inside of the lower lid. This will reflect light off of the white onto the eye making the eye appear whiter. Lining the lips is not complicated, yet I see a lot of women doing it improperly. The first step is choosing the proper color. It should be a color that will compliment your lipstick. I always suggest using the same color you use for your blush. If you have the proper color for your blush it will look fabulous. Start on the outside following the edge of the lip working your way towards the center. Do this for both sides of the top lip. Then repeat the process for the bottom. It is that simple. The key here is using the proper color to complement your lipstick not to make it stand out. My mascara always clumps my lashes together, is there a method of applying it without getting that clumpy look? When applying mascara on the lower lashes, hold the wand vertically and use a left-right motion and apply using the tip only. For the upper lashes, starting at the base, hold the wand horizontally and push inward and upward to add curl to the lashes and while pushing upward, wiggle the wand left to right to separate.I have blond hair which gives me the appearance of having no eyebrows, is there anything I can do to correct this?By having light hair, you should choose a color for your eyebrows that is only slightly darker and use a brush-on color as opposed to a pencil. How do I properly shape my eyebrows? So many misconceptions are brought up with this simple process. We developed this method to make it easy for anyone to follow.Step 1 - Start by combing the brows upward and away towards the hairline using our Spiral Brush. Step 2 - Using our brow pencil or shadow paint in brows using a darker color than your hair color. This will help you with the next steps. The crest of the arch should always be above the eye socket and just outside of where the pupil is. The eyebrow itself starts inside the eye socket and continues upward to the arch. Step 3 - To see where the brow should begin, using your pencil place it at the edge of your nose and connect this point to the corresponding inside corner of your eye. The line it makes is where the brow should begin. Step 4 – Hold the pencil to the same edge of the nose and connect it with the outer corner of the corresponding eye. If you continue that line this will show you where the brow will end. Step 5 – Tweeze away any hairs that do not fall into those lines. (Note do not use the pencil to draw these lines on the face only use it as a straight edge to show you the key points that define you brows) Since our faces differ from one side to the other a simple way to make sure both sides are balanced before beginning on the other brow is to place the pencil on the outer point of one brow to the inner point of the same brow and the inner point of the opposite brow. The pencil should make a straight line. This should be done on both side to make sure the brows are balanced. The reason for this step is because the brows are what balances the whole face. Step 6 – Repeat the process for the other eye. How do I "open up" my eyes using eye shadow?Tips for creating Dynamic Eyes: The first step to achieving Dynamic Eyes is to use a highlighter like our Beige Eye-Lite and apply it from the nose, ( the thickness of the brush) following up under the eye brow and extend to the hairline. Then using a large brush like our Complexion Brush start from the nose and blend the Eye-Lite upward towards the brows and the hairline. Now we are going to apply the eye shadow. To give your eyes dimension we are going to be using three different eye shadows. The first color is going to be the darkest color and your base color. Apply this shadow from your eye lashes to the bottom of the Beige Eye-Lite in the previous step. Remember this color needs to be relatively dark so that you can use two other colors that will be lighter than the base (first shadow) color. Next you will apply your eye liner. For an eye liner you can use a pencil, but for best results you will want to use a flat eye shadow and a firm thin bristle brush like our Brow Brush. By using the shadow instead of a pencil you will get a well defined line that is more natural in appearance. You will also find your eye liner will stay on longer. Always start from the outside of your eye and work inwards towards your nose. This will help you to make both eyes more symmetrical. Another key note is start your liner slightly away from the point where the top and bottom lid meet, on the inside and the outside of your eyes. Always remember to apply your liner thicker on the outside of the eye and thinner towards the inside. You will be amazed at how much this simple technique will dramatically open up your eyes. Now it is time for the second eye shadow. This shadow needs to be one shade lighter than the base shadow, because we want this area to come out more. This is how you can bring out deep set eyes. Start the application at the top of the liner over your base shadow to the crease of your eye. Remember to stop the application at the crease. If you go above it you will only emphasize the heaviness of the lid. Now you will move on to that third shadow. This shadow needs to be one shade lighter than the second shadow, or two shades lighter than your base shadow. The reason for this is this color is going to highlight your eye brows, which is what creates most of the expressions you make with your face. You will apply this shadow from the crease of your eye to the bottom of the eye brow. Next you will apply your mascara to the top and bottom lashes. So I do not make this tip to wordy, please read our beauty tip on the proper method of applying your mascara. You will now get your highlighter and apply it under your eyes and blend away any excess. This will help to alleviate any dark circles by bring that area forward. Now you can take your large complexion brush and blend all the eye shadows together. You are finished. Applying your make-up is nothing more than manipulating the shadows and highlight on the face. This is one reason to use a highlighter and not a "concealler". The highlighter is used to bring an area forward that creates a shadow you do not want (i.e. dark circles under the eyes or laugh lines and wrinkles). Also by adding shadows at strategic places on your face you can enhance the dimensionality of your face (i.e. alleviating puffy lids). We live in a three dimensional world, and by using these techniques along with our cosmetics, you will be able to take full advantage of it. What is the proper method for lining my eyes and lips?Lining your eyes is what defines the shape of the eye. If you have the proper color for your blush it will look fabulous. Start on the outside following the edge of the lip working your way towards the center. Do this for both sides of the top lip. Then repeat the process for the bottom. It is that simple. The key here is using the proper color to complement your lipstick not to make it stand out. Why should I wear three eye shadows? We live in a world of three dimensions, so you need to create the same shadows and contours that the face creates. This is the reason why it is so important to use at least three shadows to create the desired illusion. When you are applying your eye shadow the goal is to bring out your eyes, which are the key focal point of your face. Start by applying a light color from the eyelashes to the crease of the eye. This will frame your eyes. The next color should be at least three shades darker than the first shadow and apply it from the crease of the eye to just below the eye brow. This will contour the brow bone to eliminate the appearance of puffy lids. For the third color or highlighting color apply it from the top of the second shadow to the brows to enhance your eye brows. This step is important since your eye brows are what creates the expression on your face. After applying your three shadows make sure to blend using our complexion brush to alleviate any lines of demarcation for a smooth natural appearance. What are some of the "tricks of the trade"?There are a number of different tricks and techniques that we have developed to make applying make-up easier, as well as more appealing. Let's start with the basics. Always start your make-up with your foundation. This will even out your complexion and give you a good base to start with. Now for the trick. Use a sponge to apply your foundation. This way your foundation will not change colors due to the oils on your fingers, and you will not contaminate your foundation. Another trick is to use a large complexion brush to smooth out your foundation around the hairline and jaw line. This way you will not have a line of demarcation around the edge of your foundation. Next apply your brow color. Follow up with a brow gel to keep your brows looking nice all day or night. Apply your highlighter next. The trick here is to use a highlighter like our Beige Eye-lite that is creamy instead of a waxy cover-up. When you are trying to hide lines on the face, using a waxy substance will not move with your face, thus causing creases and other wrinkles to form in the product. Using a creamy highlighter will get into the lines to lighten them and make them less visible. Again use your complexion brush to blend your highlighting after you have applied it. Now it is time to concentrate on your eyes. Applying make-up is like being an Illusionist or Magician. It is not like an artist that paints, because we are working with three dimensions. This is why it is important to use three different eye shadows. Starting from the top eyelash choose a color of a medium tone. Apply that from the lashes to the crease in the eye. The next shadow should be two shades darker than the the first. Apply this shadow from the top of the first to the brow bone. The next shadow should be one shade lighter than the first to highlight the eye brows, because the eye brows are what gives you your expressions. Apply this shadow from the top of the second shadow to the bottom of the eye brows. This is how you give your eyes dimension, by going light, dark, lightest with your shadows. Now apply your eye-liner. The trick here is to use a shadow and firm bristle brush. This will give a more natural appearance. Always start from the outside going toward the center on the top and bottom. Another trick to this is to make sure you do not make the top and bottom meet at the corners both inside and outside. By doing this you will make you eyes appear larger. Something else you can do to your eyes if you would like them to appear whiter, is to use a white pencil on the inside of the lower lid. This way light will reflect off of the white onto your eyes. This is especially helpful for people that tend to have a lot of redness in their eyes. Now it is time once again to blend with your large complexion brush. We are almost done. Your next step will be your blush. The blush is applied to the cheek bone, and if you stare at yourself in the mirror find the place where your cheek goes from flat and starts to curve back. This is where you should start your blush, then follow the cheek bone back. Now let's do your lips. Make sure that your blush color and lipstick complement each other when you hold them together. If they do not look good side by side they will not look good on your face. This is also important for the next trick. Use your blush as a base color for your lipstick. This will help your lipstick last longer and prevent it from bleeding. The next trick for your lips is to use a soft bristle brush like our Gold Lip Brush to apply your lipstick. You will have more control this way, and your lipstick will stay on better. Like your eye-liner start from the outside and work in towards the center on the top and bottom lip. If you have small lips and you want to make them larger apply your liner just outside your lips. Conversely if you have large lips you can line just inside to make them appear smaller. Now that you know some of the tricks of the trade you can apply your make-up like a professional. |
